Background
“The 2030 Agenda remains our commitment to the children and youth of today so that they may achieve their full human potential, as critical agents of change and torchbearers of the 2030 Agenda for current and future generations.”
Political Declaration, SDG Summit 2023
Globally, there is an increasing recognition of the importance of strengthening meaningful youth engagement in policymaking and decision-making processes at all levels, particularly in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The promise of SDG16.3 to ensure equal access to justice for all remains a significant challenge with 5.1 billion people lacking meaningful access to justice. Youth engagement is critical for advancing SDG16.3, as young leaders play a pivotal role in advocating for fair and just legal systems, reducing inequalities in access to justice, and fostering peaceful, inclusive societies. They bring innovative perspectives and solutions to these challenges, helping to bridge gaps in the legal system and ensuring that justice is accessible to all, particularly the most vulnerable.
By empowering young people and ensuring their meaningful participation in closing the justice gap, we recognize their role in positive societal change and acknowledge their key contributions in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.
Objectives
Designed as an intergenerational dialogue between the Young Justice Leaders and senior leaders within the multilateral and justice sectors, the event will explore meaningful ways for young people to contribute to SDG 16.3 while officially launching the new cohort of Young Justice Leaders on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2024.
This structured exchange aims to serve as a learning opportunity for all. The Young Justice Leaders can benefit from the experience and insights of more experienced leaders who have been involved with the UN and the development agenda for many years. At the same time, these more established leaders stand to gain from young perspectives and insights about the current justice challenges faced by today’s youth and how they seek to address them.
This amalgamation of perspectives presents an opportunity for co-created, people-centered, access to justice solutions. The 90-minute moderated dialogue will include a series of short, rapid-fire questions for the speakers. It will focus on highlighting the benefits and opportunities for young people to actively engage in the global discourse on access to justice. There will also be an opportunity for the audience members to engage with the speakers and contribute to the dialogue.
