The High-Level Political Forum represents a key opportunity to explore the role that local and regional governments play in the achievement of the SDGs and how they can effectively partner with all kinds of stakeholders to truly leave no one and no place behind. While data availability is one of the most pressing challenges to make the 2030 Agenda’s aspirations a reality, important efforts are being made to document progress and setbacks at the local level and contribute to accelerating action.

Presented to the HLPF every year from 2017 to 2024, the “Towards the localization of the SDGs” report provides key and bold recommendations for all stakeholders to jointly contribute to enhancing LRGs’ role in achieving the SDGs by 2030 and beyond. Based on a total of 196 responses from LRGs and their associations from 70 different countries, this year’s report provides an analysis of the remarkable initiatives undertaken by LRGs to localize the SDGs as well as of the still-to-be-strengthened LRGs’ involvement in national coordination and reporting processes. With a focus on the SDGs under review at the 2024 HLPF, this report shows how these SDGs are unquestionably connected and calls for the essential acknowledgement of the significant role of local and regional governments in addressing complex issues such as poverty, climate inaction and violence.

The Launch of the GTF Annual Report “Towards the localization of the SDGs” session will contribute to reflecting about the most updated figures, contexts and inspiring practices around SDG localization, as well as about the key messages and recommendations targeting the international stakeholders, national governments and other actors for accelerating SDG localization around the globe.

The session will count on the participation of representatives from local and regional governments, national governments, international organizations and civil society to inspire innovative collaboration methods towards the 2030 Agenda and eradicate poverty in times of multiple crises.

The session is co-organized by the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments, United Cities and Local Governments and the United Nations Development Programme.
