Pathfinders at the United Nations General Assembly 2024

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will be held from Tuesday, September 24 to Monday, September 30, 2024 in New York. During UNGA's High-level Week, Pathfinders will also participate in the Summit of the Future, a high-level event bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future. Effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival but difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust, using outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities.

Join the Pathfinders at UNGA 2024, where we will be speaking at, partnering on, and hosting a number of discussions and events exploring progress on SDG16+, and themes relating to halving global violence, justice for all, and inequality and exclusion.

Moving Towards a Financing Framework for People-Centered Justice

This hybrid event will be an opportunity for members of the Workstream on Justice Financing to, for the first time, unpack the draft concept and roadmap of the Justice Financing Framework to participants who will include members of justice ministries, finance ministries, permanent missions to the UN, judiciaries, World Bank, OECD, donors, policymakers and justice sector technical experts, amongst others. It will also be an opportunity to generate feedback and input on the proposed framework and roadmap, help to refine the Framework, and promote the ultimate adoption and use of the Framework by a broad range of actors within the justice sector.

Beyond the Battlefields: Proven Approaches to Halving Global Violence in Support of the SDGs

Co-hosted by the governments of Costa Rica and Czechia, the Center on International Cooperation (CIC) at New York University, and the World Health Organization (WHO), this event will present strategies to dramatically reduce violence where it is frequently overlooked, but most often occurs and where there is the greatest promise for a return of investment: in our homes, streets, and communities.

Room for Optimism: A Precondition for Success in Challenging Times

This event, to be hosted during the Action Days of the Summit of the Future, will provide an opportunity for Member State representatives, UN officials, and Civil Society actors to contribute to a narrative grounded in optimism. Representatives from various areas of the international system will share what it is from the Pact for the Future that brings them hope in the face of the very real challenges before us. They will offer their reflections and reasons for optimism, highlighting one or two actions that they think have particularly strong potential and proposing next steps to take that action forward. Far from an exercise in idealism, the aim of this event will be to highlight and connect common aspirations in order to catalyze future action beyond the Summit itself.

Pact for the Future and Beyond: Towards the 4th International Conference of Financing for Development

Join CIC and our coalition partners, ImPACT Coalition on International Financial Architecture Reform and Financing for Development, for a session to create a platform for dialogue and reflection on the progress made under the Pact for the Future, particularly in the areas of international financial architecture reform and financing for development. Focus areas will include: taking stock of the current commitments, follow-up strategies for implementation, identifying areas for additional efforts, and addressing how to pursue active civil society engagement.

Towards 2030 and Beyond: Accelerating the SDGs through access to evidence on what works

Co-sponsored by two UN Member States (Malawi and the United Kingdom) with support from the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and the Global SDG Synthesis Coalition, this event llooks at the role of science and digital technologies in helping decision-makers accelerate progress towards the SDGs. It aligns strongly with the Pact for the Future, emphasizing the importance of the science-policy interface and use of science in solving complex global challenges. CIC Executive Director, Ambassador Martin Kimani will join the panel discussion.

From Words to Action: A Networked Approach to Upholding Commitments from the Summit of the Future

Taking place at the 2024 UN Summit of the Future, this hybrid event will explore how Action 59 of the draft Pact of the Future (“strengthen our partnerships to deliver on existing commitments and to address new and emerging challenges”) can be made real. We expect that this Summit will take us several steps forward to renewing global governance. However, as with international agreements before it, maximizing the impact of outcomes will require an intentional, networked, and sustained effort from member states and civil society in its wake.
